Feeding Therapy

What Is Feeding Therapy?

Feeding and/or swallowing therapy helps children of all ages who have issues with chewing, manipulating, sucking, and swallowing foods or liquids. Most children will go through some phase of being “a picky eater,” but if you or your doctor have concerns that it may be more than that, then feeding therapy is beneficial. It is more than just “teaching a child to eat.” Our therapists will work closely with you and your child to determine the source of your child’s difficulties and create a more enjoyable mealtime experience for your child.

What Are The Signs That My Child Needs Feeding Therapy?

Unfortunately, for some children, mealtime can be both challenging and stressful. If you notice that some of the following behaviors are affecting your child’s ability to enjoy mealtime, eat safely or meet their nutritional needs, you may want to consider feeding therapy.

  • Refusing to try new foods
  • Trouble with swallowing or chewing
  • Aversion to certain food textures
  • Gagging or vomiting
  • Tantrums at mealtime

What Happens During A Feeding Therapy Session?

The therapist’s approach to treatment will vary based on each child’s needs. This may include sensory, motor or behavioral models. Parents and/or caregivers play an important role in this process. Your therapist will provide you with feeding strategies to try at home along with different tactics for addressing negative behaviors associated with mealtime.  You are the child’s biggest cheerleader, and we encourage you to be as involved in the process as possible so that mealtime can become a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
